Ranking consistently among one of the most dangerous professions, commercial trucking is also known as among the most heavily regulated. Despite these regulations, (unless contractually obligated), there are no laws, statutes, ordinances nor mandates compelling any carrier/employer to help get any truck driver home for any reason.
Professional over the road truck drivers can travel several hundred miles per day and be away from home many days, weeks and for some owner operators, months at a time. Some drivers may live in their rigs.
While many carriers/employers will assist a trucker or his/her family in getting their trucker home after a tragedy on our nations highways, many do not.
Imagine being told your beloved trucker, perhaps the breadwinner in the family, had lost his/her life a thousand miles away in a town you had never heard of.
The costs of preparation, documentation and transportation of a deceased person can be devastating to a family. The surviving spouse may not have access to a bank account or final paycheck.
truckersfinalmile.org is a veteran founded 501 (c) (3) Charity recognizing the financial burden the families in the trucking industry face when tragedy strikes. Established in May 2014.
