Texas Governor Calls for Preservation of Title 42
The governor of Texas said Sunday that if the Trump administration ends its immigration policy, it would create total chaos on the southern border. He warned that the end of Title 42, which limits how many asylum seekers may enter the country, will cause a surge in cross-border migration.
Several Republican-led states are trying to keep the policy in place. However, last week, a federal appeals court rejected their bid. They are now seeking to get the court to suspend or extend the ruling. Despite their efforts, the ruling is due to expire on Wednesday.
The CDC has said that the public health crisis caused by the coronavirus has now reached a point where the policy no longer makes sense. But some critics say that Republicans are hypocritical for trying to maintain the restriction.
The government has released a six-part plan to transition away from the policy. The plan will include hiring more contractors to work on the border. In the meantime, there is still a large number of migrants crossing the border. These people do not have the proper paperwork to enter the country, and therefore could be removed.
The influx of migrants has strained state infrastructure and has placed thousands in shelters. The influx has also forced the mayor of El Paso to declare a state of emergency.
Meanwhile, the Texas governor has also proposed a plan to move some migrants to the nation’s capital. But some critics claim that it is an illegal move.
