Your Unbreakable Spirit
By Rev. Barbara Lane, MA, OMC
Adversity knocks on everyone’s door at some point in their life. It knocked on mine at the age of three when I was taken into foster care. That experience made me come to terms with a valuable truth: life is difficult.
Even in my youth, I found strength in my spiritual bond with God. This powerful source may seem incomprehensible to some, causing them to dismiss its power and lose sight of their true identity as children of God – the wellspring of faith, hope, and perseverance. It’s almost like we fall into a deep sleep and forget about our spiritual connection. Without it, we are consumed by the tragedies of this world, succumbing to pain, despair, sorrow, and animosity.
How can we escape the endless cycle of suffering that the world offers and remember our divine connection to God? How do we tap into the truth that the breath of God resides within us, providing us with limitless strength, guidance, comfort, and joy?
Anyone who has pursued a new hobby or developed a new skill understands the importance of practice. Through dedicated practice, we can reach a state of “flow” where our entire being is fully immersed in the activity and undergoes transformation. The same applies to practicing our faith – it helps us redirect our attention away from worldly concerns and towards our spiritual essence. With diligent practice, we awaken and recall our true identity, accessing the inexplicable power that comes with this realization.
In the book of John 17:14, it is written “I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world” (KJV). Even as we walk on this earth, our spirits are not constrained by its limits.
This message has the power to transform lives for those who truly understand it. Our time on this physical plane is temporary; our bodies will eventually die, and even the earth itself will fade away. But our spirits will endure eternally. We are spiritual beings, not bound to this world. Keeping this truth in mind is the source of God’s infinite power – the key to experiencing miracles.
Unfortunately, people who have endured difficult experiences in their past, such as trauma or abuse, are often labeled as permanently damaged and incapable of overcoming their struggles. This can be devastating when these individuals begin to internalize these labels, losing faith in themselves and their ability to heal. However, it is important to remember that these labels are imposed by society, not by our spirit. As children of God, our spirit cannot be broken but our connection to it may simply be forgotten.
I am a firm believer that miracles can provide joy, faith, and hope for all regardless of their earthly experiences. I further believe it is all about perspective. Even as a young child, I was blessed to shift my perception from the darkness of the world to the unbreakable glory of my spirit through the guidance of God.
In John 16:33 (KJV), Jesus said, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
As an abused and abandoned child, my spirit remained strong and unbroken despite any hate or malice directed towards me from the world. We must remember that we are all children of God and connected to Him. Our spirits transcend this world and cannot be destroyed. The notion of a “broken spirit” is false; our spirits are not broken but simply asleep and can be awakened once again.
To find faith and hope in challenging circumstances, ask yourself: What part of you is eternal? What part of you is untouched? What part of you is authentic, timeless, and unchanging? Who are you beyond this world? What part of you belongs to God?
Your answers will guide you towards a limitless understanding of the world, enabling you to see it with grace and compassion rather than anger and hatred. Remembering your unbreakable spirit will radiate the love of God as you journey through life.
