Can Stories Change the World?
The Price of Business Digital Network has a new series of outstanding commentaries from thought leaders. This is one in that series.
Brownell Landrum
Hi, I’m Brownell Landrum, author of The End, the We Meet Again trilogy, and other metaphysical books and screenplays. You can find me at my website: Brownell Landrum dot com. I’m the only Brownell Landrum in the world, so it’s pretty easy to find me.
Let’s start by asking:
What do grief, life purpose, and concerns about climate change and the future of the planet all have in common?
They can all be healed with stories. Correction: the right kinds of stories.
With this in mind, I started the Life is a Trip! Podcast. The purpose of the podcast is to showcase writers from all over the world sharing their stories (fictional or factual) about reincarnation, the afterlife, and other metaphysical mysteries.
Why fictional or factual?
The motto for my writing is “Lose yourself in the fiction… Find yourself in the truth.” I’ve found that fiction can often open hearts and minds more than “true” stories because readers or listeners can suspend disbelief and enjoy the story.
Why reincarnation, the afterlife, and other metaphysical mysteries?
First of all, they’re fun! What’s more entertaining than a love story about a couple over multiple lifetimes? Or is it more interesting than what happens after you die? And exploring age-old questions: “Do things happen for a reason?” “Are we guided ‘from above?’” And “What happens in the confluence of fate vs. free will?”
Second, since over 1.45 billion people around the world believe in reincarnation, why aren’t there more stories?
And third, let’s talk about healing through stories – by using a story.
Several months ago, an atheist friend passed away. She and I had many discussions on what happens “after.” You can imagine how that debate went.
Still, she read some of my reincarnation stories and enjoyed them. When she was suffering from a terminal illness, I teased that after she dies she had come to visit me and tell me she was wrong. Predictably, she scoffed.
Months later, as she took her last breath – her granddaughter reminded her of what I said. It made her smile.
Being stubborn, my friend took her time before visiting me. I was staying in a resort in Tunisia, a charming place where birds would fly in and out of the cafeteria. You see, birds can often carry the energy of spirits.
One day, a bird got very close to me, stopped, and looked me in the eye. She was joined by another bird. I asked if it was her.
Later when I went up to my room at the other end of the resort and on the third floor, the two birds were waiting for me inside near the elevator – and another was outside the window looking in.
Let me tell you. I never saw any birds there before or after.
I relayed this story to another atheist friend of hers. I asked if she thought our mutual friend was now with her husband who’d died years earlier. And I wondered if the third bird might be her own husband – who had recently passed.
The hope and joy this story gave our mutual friend was immeasurable.
That’s why I want to share these stories.
